64th Scale Gallery

This was entered in the 20th Hotwheels Convention in Anaheim 2006.  It won 1st place in the Diorama Class at the Customs Contest.

It started as a basic Hotwheels VW Drag Bus.  The top was cut off, and a new roof added.  A new back was grafted onto it  to give it that signature VW Bus look for the rear.  With the new roof, came a new look with the trademark 21 windows that the VW Micro-Bus had.   The body was altered a little further to give it the proper stance.  It was then sprayed with an OD Green to resemble the Military WW2 Bomber planes.  Graphics were added to complete the look, and to go over the top, the ever popular Bomber Art with the "Pin-up Girls" graces the top.

The chassis was addressed in the same style theme.  Not too much, not too gaudy.  Keep it low-tech and in the same themes as the fighter-planes of the era.  So a diesel six cyl. engine was chosen with some vintage style exhaust and heat covers made from steel mesh.   A few added details here and there round it out nicely.  Again, nothing to modern to keep it from the era.  The interior is no frills and vintage all the way.  Right down to the OD Green seats and brown seatbelts.   White wall real riders tires complete the look.   This looks as if it could have competed at the Salt Flats in the early 50's.

For the display, I wanted to keep the same theme, but go with something nobody had done before.  Is a replica grenade style case.  When closed up, it looks as real as any you have ever seen.  Right down to the decals and military numbers.  It has the pull ring that can be set to pull away and the "spoon" will actually fly off just like the real thing.  Except it isn't.  When sitting on the stand, the side (top) can be removed to show a chrome tread-plate design where the Bus will sit.   The whole thing sits on a stand that has the logo "The Bomb" displayed on front.
